This PR updates two outdated items in
doc/install/index.rst:-
a) ActivePython under "Python distributions": the link
https://www.activestate.com/products/python/downloads/returns a 404 error. The Wayback Machine shows that the page was online until December 2024. At that point it offered ActivePython only for Python 3.8 and 2.7 (3.6 on macOS). Since January 2025 it redirects to a missing page. ActiveState's current Python page is about its package-security platform and does not mention ActivePython. The only ActivePython still public on the ActiveState Platform isActivePython-3.8, described as the "Final release of Community Python 3.8. End of life update…". Matplotlib 3.7 was the last release to support Python 3.8 (frommin_dep_policy.rst), and the current version needs Python >= 3.12. So this PR removes the entry instead of changing the link. Users of Matplotlib 3.7 and older still see ActivePython on the install page of their versioned docs (e.g. matplotlib.org/3.7.5/). If you prefer to keep an entry, it could link to the ActivePython 3.8 Platform project instead, but that would point readers of the current docs at a Python that cannot run this version of Matplotlib. -
b) MacPorts: the macOS section says
sudo port install py38-pip. Python 3.8 is far below the minimum (requires-python = ">=3.12"), and thepy38-pipport is marked inactive on ports.macports.org. This line was bumped together with the minimum Python in 2295a0ebc5 (py36-pip→py38-pip), but later bumps missed it. This PR changes it topy314-pip, the newest version in the trove classifiers and the tox envlist.
